VAT Registration Practice
Ahmed Mahfoudh Chartered Accountants & Auditors handles VAT registration by first establishing whether registration is required and what evidence supports that conclusion. I review the business activity, taxable turnover, available records, and registration documents before preparing the FTA application. That order matters because the figures and information submitted become part of the tax record from the start. The service is designed for Sharjah businesses that need to register correctly and understand the practical recordkeeping obligations that begin once a Tax Registration Number is issued.
How VAT Registration Is Checked
The usual mistake is submitting an application before confirming what counts toward taxable turnover.
Eligibility is calculated before filing
The registration decision is based on taxable supplies and imports, not a rough estimate of all money received. Mandatory registration applies when the relevant threshold is exceeded, while voluntary registration has a separate lower threshold and its own eligibility conditions.
Documents support the application figures
The application is prepared using documents that substantiate the business details and turnover entered in EmaraTax. This may include the trade licence, identification documents, bank details, invoices, contracts, and records showing expected or historic taxable supplies.
The handover covers next duties
A TRN is the start of VAT compliance, not the final step. After registration, the business needs VAT-aware records, valid tax invoices where required, and a process for preparing returns by the deadlines assigned through the FTA portal.

VAT Registration Questions Answered
The essential rules to understand before submitting an FTA VAT application.
When is VAT registration mandatory?
VAT registration is mandatory when the value of taxable supplies and imports exceeds AED 375,000 over the previous 12 months, or is expected to exceed that amount within the next 30 days. The business must apply within 30 days of becoming required to register.
Can I register voluntarily for VAT?
Yes. Voluntary registration may be available when taxable supplies, taxable expenses, or both exceed AED 187,500. The application must show that the business meets the voluntary registration conditions.
What documents are needed?
Common documents include the trade licence, passport and Emirates ID of relevant owners or managers, bank account details, and turnover evidence such as invoices or contracts. The FTA may request further documents based on the application details.
How is taxable turnover calculated?
Taxable turnover generally includes standard-rated and zero-rated supplies, as well as certain imports, over the relevant 12-month period. Exempt supplies are treated differently, so invoices and business activity must be reviewed before calculating the threshold.
How long does VAT registration take?
The application is submitted through EmaraTax after the information and supporting documents are ready. The FTA may issue a TRN or request clarification; the timing depends on the completeness of the application and any FTA review queries.
What happens after receiving a TRN?
You must apply VAT correctly to taxable supplies, issue tax invoices where required, maintain VAT records, and submit VAT returns by the deadlines shown in EmaraTax. VAT records generally need to be retained for at least five years.
Is there a penalty for late registration?
Yes. Late VAT registration can result in an administrative penalty of AED 10,000. Registering promptly once the AED 375,000 mandatory threshold is reached helps avoid that exposure.
Can a business deregister later?
Yes, if it no longer meets the registration conditions or stops making taxable supplies. A deregistration application is made through the FTA process, and the business must settle outstanding VAT obligations before deregistration is completed.
