What Getting This Right Avoids

Filing on time is the minimum — this is what a properly reconciled return actually saves you.

No Late Filing Fines

A first missed return costs AED 1,000, and AED 2,000 if it happens again within 24 months. Filing on schedule avoids both.

Payment Penalties Stay Off Your Books

Unpaid VAT is fined 2% the day after the deadline, then 4% a month, up to 300%. Getting the amount right the first time stops that clock from starting.

Input VAT You're Owed Isn't Left Behind

Reconciling purchases against ledgers before filing catches recoverable input tax that gets missed when returns are rushed.

A Clean Record If the FTA Ever Asks

Reconciled figures and supporting documents mean an FTA audit request doesn't turn into a scramble through five years of invoices.

What Happens Each Filing Period

The same reconciliation and submission work, run every quarter or month depending on your filing cycle.

Records Reconciliation

Sales, purchases, and expense records checked against bank statements and ledgers before any figures are entered.

Input and Output VAT Calculation

Recoverable input tax and payable output tax calculated per category, not just totaled from invoices.

VAT 201 Preparation

The return completed field by field, with categorisations that match how the FTA expects the figures broken down.

EmaraTax Submission

Return filed through the EmaraTax portal ahead of the 28-day deadline, with the FTA confirmation kept on file.

Nil Return Filing

Filing for periods with no taxable activity — skipping this still triggers a penalty, so it's handled the same as any other period.

Payment Amount Confirmation

Exact amount due communicated before the deadline, with the payment method and reference needed to settle it.

Voluntary Disclosure Support

Correcting a prior period's error through Form VAT 211 before the FTA finds it first.

Filing Handled the Same Way, Every Period

Ahmed Mahfoudh Chartered Accountants & Auditors treats every VAT return the same way regardless of how routine it looks — records reconciled against bank statements first, figures categorised the way the FTA expects on Form VAT 201, then submitted through EmaraTax with time to spare before the 28-day cutoff. For a Dubai business filing quarterly or monthly, that consistency is what keeps a return from turning into a penalty.

Where Returns Usually Go Wrong

Most VAT penalties come from rushed reconciliation, not from not knowing the rules.

AMC Sami Abdallah Partners team
Reconciliation Happens Before the Deadline Rush

We start reviewing records as soon as the tax period closes, not the week the return is due. That gap is what catches a missing invoice or a miscategorised expense before it becomes a submission error.

Nil Periods Get Filed, Not Skipped

A quiet quarter with no taxable activity still needs a return. We track your filing calendar so a nil period doesn't get missed and turn into an avoidable AED 1,000 fine.

We Flag Recoverable Input Tax You'd Otherwise Miss

Input VAT on eligible purchases and expenses gets checked line by line against your ledger, not estimated from totals — that's usually where a rushed return leaves money unclaimed.

Errors Get Corrected Through Disclosure, Not Ignored

If a past return turns out wrong, we file a voluntary disclosure rather than letting it sit — catching it yourself carries a lighter penalty than the FTA catching it during an audit.

VAT Filing Questions

What Dubai business owners usually ask before handing this over.

How often do I need to file a VAT return?

Quarterly if your annual turnover is below AED 150 million, monthly if it's AED 150 million or more. The FTA can assign a different tax period to specific businesses on request.

What's the actual filing deadline?

Both the return and any payment owed are due within 28 days of the end of the tax period, submitted through the EmaraTax portal.

What happens if I file late?

AED 1,000 for a first late filing, AED 2,000 if it happens again within 24 months. Late payment is penalised separately — 2% of the unpaid tax immediately, then 4% a month, up to a maximum of 300%.

Do I still need to file if I had no sales this period?

Yes. A nil return is still required, and skipping it triggers the same late filing penalty as any other missed return.

What if I find an error in a return I already filed?

You file a voluntary disclosure using Form VAT 211. Correcting it yourself before the FTA finds it during an audit carries a lighter penalty.

How long do I need to keep VAT records?

Five years for most businesses, extended to 15 years for real estate-related records, in case the FTA requests them during that period.
