Put the evidence behind each tax position in order before the FTA asks for it.
A Defensible Tax File

Missing documents, unreconciled balances, and unusual transactions are identified before they become part of an incomplete FTA response.

Finance staff and management work from one reviewed account of the transaction instead of providing separate, conflicting answers under pressure.

Where an issue needs correction or further review, management receives a practical action list rather than a vague warning.

Tax Audit Preparation Work
Ahmed Mahfoudh Chartered Accountants & Auditors has more than 13 years of UAE financial experience. I approach FTA audit assistance by starting with the tax return, then tracing each material figure through the accounting records and source documents. The Federal Tax Authority operates nationally, including Abu Dhabi, but the evidence behind a transaction may involve mainland operations, free-zone activity, imports, or group records. The work is structured around what can be shown, not assumptions about what should be available.
Build The File Before Replying
Buyers often answer an FTA request too quickly before checking whether the submitted figures can be supported.
The return is the starting point
I begin with the VAT return or Corporate Tax return already filed, rather than collecting documents at random. Each significant amount is matched to the accounting trail and source evidence, which keeps the review focused on the figures the FTA is likely to examine.
Every request has an owner
Audit requests can involve finance, operations, procurement, sales, and management. I use a request register to identify who holds each record, what has been checked, and whether the response is ready. This reduces duplicated work and avoids unanswered items.
Uncertainty is addressed honestly
Where records are incomplete or treatment needs further analysis, the issue is documented before a response is sent. I explain the available evidence and the action required, so management can make an informed decision instead of relying on an unsupported conclusion.

FTA Audit Help In Abu Dhabi
Important rules, records, deadlines, and response points to understand before dealing with an FTA audit.
What is an FTA tax audit?
An FTA tax audit is a review of a taxpayer’s records, tax returns, transactions, and compliance with UAE tax law. It may cover VAT, Corporate Tax, Excise Tax, or more than one tax type.
How much notice does the FTA give?
The FTA generally gives at least five business days’ notice before beginning a tax audit. The notice identifies the audit date, audit location or method, and relevant tax periods.
Can Abu Dhabi companies be audited?
Yes. The Federal Tax Authority can audit taxpayers across the UAE, including Abu Dhabi mainland and free-zone businesses. An audit is not limited to companies above the AED 375,000 VAT registration threshold.
Which VAT records are needed?
VAT records can include tax invoices, credit notes, import documents, sales records, purchase records, and VAT reconciliations. VAT records are generally required to be retained for at least five years.
How long keep Corporate Tax records?
Corporate Tax records and documents are generally retained for seven years after the end of the relevant tax period. This includes information supporting income, expenses, adjustments, and relief claims.
What if the FTA finds an error?
The FTA may issue a tax assessment or an administrative penalty assessment after its review. The appropriate response depends on the error, tax period, evidence available, and whether a Voluntary Disclosure is required.
Can a return be corrected during an audit?
A taxpayer may need to use the FTA’s Voluntary Disclosure process for a material error in a submitted tax return. The correction route should be assessed before filing because an FTA audit may already cover the period.
What happens after an FTA decision?
If you disagree with an FTA decision, a reconsideration request is generally due within 40 business days of the decision notification. The request must state the grounds and include relevant supporting documents.
How is audit assistance priced?
Fees depend on the number of tax periods, returns, transactions, records, and FTA requests involved. A review covering five years of VAT records or seven years of Corporate Tax records will require a larger evidence review.
