Abu Dhabi VAT Registration
Ahmed Mahfoudh Chartered Accountants & Auditors brings more than 13 years of UAE financial experience to VAT registration work in Abu Dhabi. I begin by examining the figure that matters: taxable turnover over a rolling period, not a rough annual sales estimate. From there, the business details and documents are checked for consistency before the EmaraTax application is completed. The Federal Tax Authority handles VAT registration nationally, so the same federal rules apply to Abu Dhabi mainland and free-zone businesses. A careful registration file also gives the business a better starting point for its first VAT return.
How VAT Registration Is Prepared
The common mistake is using total revenue as the threshold figure without separating taxable, exempt, and unsupported amounts.
Turnover is tested on a rolling basis
Mandatory VAT registration is assessed using taxable supplies and imports from the preceding 12 months, or supplies expected in the coming 30 days. This is not simply a calendar-year revenue test, so recent invoices, contracts, orders, and imports need to be reviewed carefully.
The application is checked before submission
Trade-licence details, activity descriptions, ownership information, business address, bank information, and turnover evidence are compared before entry into EmaraTax. Inconsistent or incomplete information can lead to FTA clarification requests and extend the processing period.
Registration is linked to ongoing records
VAT registration creates ongoing duties from the assigned tax period, including invoicing, accounting for output tax, retaining purchase evidence, and filing returns. The handover identifies what the business must begin tracking after the TRN is issued.

VAT Registration Questions For Abu Dhabi
The federal rules and application details to understand before seeking a UAE VAT TRN.
Does Abu Dhabi have separate VAT registration?
No. VAT registration is administered federally by the Federal Tax Authority through EmaraTax, and the same UAE VAT thresholds and process apply in Abu Dhabi and the other emirates. The business location does not create a separate Abu Dhabi VAT registration system.
When must a UAE business register?
Mandatory registration applies when taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 in the preceding 12 months or are expected to exceed AED 375,000 in the next 30 days. The registration application must generally be made within 30 days of becoming required to register.
What is voluntary VAT registration?
Voluntary registration may be available when taxable supplies, taxable expenses, or both exceed AED 187,500. The business must provide evidence that it meets the applicable voluntary-registration conditions.
How long does FTA registration take?
The FTA states an estimated application submission time of 45 minutes and an estimated completion time of 20 business days from receipt of a completed application. The actual timing can change if the FTA requests clarification or further documents.
Is there an FTA fee for registration?
The FTA VAT registration service is listed as free of charge. Any professional fee is separate and relates to assessing eligibility, preparing documents, completing the application, and supporting responses to FTA queries.
What documents are usually required?
Documents commonly include a valid trade licence, ownership and identification records, business contact details, bank account information, and evidence of taxable turnover. Importing businesses may also need customs-related information, depending on the application.
Can related companies register as a group?
Related UAE businesses may apply for VAT group registration where they meet the FTA conditions for financial, economic, and regulatory association. VAT group registration requires FTA approval and results in a single VAT registration for the group.
Can a foreign business register?
The AED 375,000 threshold does not apply to a non-resident business where it makes taxable supplies in the UAE and no other person is responsible for accounting for the VAT. The specific supply and customer arrangement must be reviewed before applying.
What happens after receiving a TRN?
The business must begin accounting for VAT from its effective registration date, issue tax invoices where required, keep VAT records, and submit returns by the dates assigned in EmaraTax. VAT records generally need to be retained for at least five years.
How is VAT registration support priced?
Fees depend on the business structure, turnover evidence, number of entities, whether voluntary or group registration is involved, record quality, and any FTA clarification support needed. A straightforward single-entity application has a different scope from a group or non-resident registration review.
