VAT Deregistration
in Dubai
When your turnover drops, your business closes, or your structure changes, we close out your VAT registration correctly and get your deregistration certificate issued.
YEARS OF UAE FINANCIAL EXPERIENCE
- Mandatory & Voluntary
- Final Return Included
- Certificate Confirmed
What Closing Out Correctly Gets You
A missed step here doesn't just delay the process, it turns into a fine.
No AED 10,000 Penalty
Missing the 20 business day application window carries a fine of AED 1,000 per month, up to a maximum of AED 10,000. Filing on time avoids it entirely.
A Closed TRN, Not a Dormant One
An unfinished deregistration leaves your Tax Registration Number open, with return and filing obligations still technically active until the FTA confirms closure.
Outstanding Tax Positions Resolved
Whether you owe the FTA or the FTA owes you, the final return settles the position before the TRN is closed, so nothing is left unresolved.
A Certificate That Proves You're Out
The deregistration certificate is what closes the conversation with banks, landlords, or buyers asking whether your VAT obligations are settled.
What the Closure Process Involves
The steps required to move from an active TRN to a confirmed deregistration.
Eligibility Assessment
Checking whether your position meets mandatory deregistration criteria (turnover below AED 187,500) or voluntary criteria (below AED 375,000, 12 months post-registration).
Application Submission
Filing the deregistration request through EmaraTax with the reason and effective date, within the 20 business day window.
Outstanding Liability Settlement
Filing any pending VAT returns and clearing outstanding tax or penalties, since unresolved liabilities are grounds for rejection.
Final VAT Return Preparation
Completing the final return once the FTA moves the application to pre-approval, due within 28 days of that notification.
FTA Query Handling
Responding to requests for trial balances, invoices, or contracts the FTA asks for during review.
Deregistration Certificate Retrieval
Confirming final approval and downloading the certificate from the EmaraTax dashboard once the TRN is closed.
Closure Handled Without Loose Ends
Ahmed Mahfoudh Chartered Accountants & Auditors checks the eligibility position first, mandatory or voluntary, before anything is submitted to the FTA. From there we clear outstanding returns, prepare the final return once the FTA calls for it, and stay on the file until the deregistration certificate is issued. For a Dubai business closing out VAT, that's what keeps a TRN from sitting half-closed for months.
Why This Drags On for Most Businesses
The common mistake is treating the application as the finish line, when it's usually the start of a longer review.
We Track the 20 Business Day Window Closely
Deregistration eligibility has a clock attached. We flag the window as soon as your turnover or business status qualifies, so the application goes in before the AED 10,000 penalty becomes a risk.
We Prepare for the Final Return Before It's Requested
The FTA gives 28 days to file the final return once it notifies you, but the notification can land with little warning. We have the figures ready before that clock starts.
We Handle FTA Queries Without You Chasing Us
A full deregistration can run past 6 months once document requests and reviews are factored in. We manage that correspondence directly instead of leaving it to sit in an inbox.
Records Stay Organised After the TRN Closes
The FTA can still request records for 5 years after deregistration. We leave your documentation filed and retrievable, not scattered across the closure process.
Who Manages Your Closure
Accountants who handle your deregistration file directly, from eligibility check to certificate.

VAT Deregistration Questions
What Dubai business owners ask before starting the closure process.
When am I required to deregister for VAT?
Mandatory deregistration applies once your taxable supplies over the past 12 months fall below AED 187,500, or you stop making taxable supplies altogether.
Can I deregister voluntarily?
Yes, once 12 months have passed since your registration date and your turnover sits below AED 375,000, you can apply for voluntary deregistration.
What happens if I miss the deadline to apply?
A penalty of AED 1,000 per month applies, up to a maximum of AED 10,000, for failing to submit the application within 20 business days of becoming eligible.
Do I need to file a final VAT return?
Yes. Once the FTA moves your application to pre-approval, it notifies you of the final return period, and that return is due within 28 days of the notification.
How long does the whole process take?
Most cases run longer than expected once document requests and FTA review are factored in, often exceeding 6 months from application to certificate.
What if I still owe VAT or I'm owed a refund?
Outstanding tax must be settled, or a refund claimed, within 28 days of the effective deregistration date, before the TRN is fully closed.
Do I need to keep records after deregistering?
Yes, UAE VAT rules require records to be retained for 5 years after deregistration, in case the FTA requests them.
