What a Proper Claim Recovers
A refund claim is only worth what gets approved. This is what careful preparation actually gets back.
Cash Back, Not Carried Forward
Excess input tax sitting unclaimed is cash tied up in your VAT account. A submitted claim converts it into money in your bank within days of approval.
Fewer Rejections on First Submission
Claims with organised supporting invoices and a validated IBAN letter go through review without the back-and-forth that delays approval.
Credits Recovered Before They Lapse
Under Federal Decree-Law No. 16 of 2025, excess input VAT can only be carried forward for 5 years from the tax period it arose in. Older credits need claiming now, not left sitting.
A Documented Trail if the FTA Queries It
Every claim is backed by the same invoices and calculations the FTA reviewer will ask for, so a follow-up request doesn't mean starting over.
What We Do to File the Claim
The steps that turn an excess input tax position into an approved, paid refund.
Refund Eligibility Check
Confirming your VAT201 shows a genuine net refundable position before any claim is prepared.
VAT311 Preparation
Completing the refund request form on EmaraTax with the exact amount, bank details, and reference to the relevant tax period.
Supporting Invoice Compilation
Assembling the top 5 largest input tax invoices and output tax invoices the FTA requires with the submission.
Bank IBAN Validation
Preparing a current bank validation letter, no older than 3 months, so payment details aren't a reason for delay.
Aged Credit Recovery
Reviewing carried-forward credits from earlier tax periods, including 2018 to 2021 balances, before the 31 December 2026 transitional deadline.
FTA Query Response
Handling any clarification request the FTA raises during its review, so the claim doesn't stall waiting on a reply.
Refund Status Tracking
Monitoring the claim through the review period and confirming the payout once the FTA approves it.
Claims Prepared to Survive Review
Ahmed Mahfoudh Chartered Accountants & Auditors checks the eligibility position before touching the VAT311 form. That means confirming the net refundable balance on your VAT201, matching it against your largest input and output invoices, and validating the bank details the FTA will pay into. For a Dubai business, that order of operations is what keeps a claim from bouncing back with a query mid-review.
Where Refund Claims Usually Stall
Most delays come from incomplete documentation, not from the FTA disputing whether the refund is owed.
We Check the Net Position Before Filing
A claim submitted without confirming the actual refundable amount on your VAT201 gets flagged. We reconcile that figure first, so the number on the VAT311 matches what the FTA already has on record.
Invoice Documentation Is Ready Before Submission
The FTA asks for your largest input and output invoices as part of the review. We compile those alongside the claim instead of scrambling to produce them after a query comes in.
Older Credits Don't Get Left Behind
Credits from 2018 through 2021 fall under a transitional deadline of 31 December 2026. We flag aged balances early so they get claimed before that window closes.
Queries Get Answered Within Days, Not Weeks
When the FTA asks for clarification during its 20 to 45 working day review, a slow response resets the clock. We monitor the claim and respond as soon as a query lands.

VAT Refund Claim Questions
What Dubai businesses ask before filing a refund claim.
When can my business actually claim a VAT refund?
When your input tax exceeds your output tax for a tax period, creating a net refundable position on your VAT201. That excess can be claimed via Form VAT311 instead of only carried forward.
How long does the FTA take to process a refund?
Standard review takes up to 20 working days, extending to 45 days for complex cases. Once approved, payment reaches your registered IBAN within 5 working days.
What documents does the FTA ask for?
Your top 5 largest input tax invoices, your 5 largest output tax invoices, and a bank IBAN validation letter no older than 3 months.
Is there a deadline for older VAT credits?
Yes. Under Federal Decree-Law No. 16 of 2025, excess input VAT can only be carried forward for 5 years from the tax period it arose in. Credits from 2018 to 2021 fall under a transitional deadline of 31 December 2026, after which they lapse.
Can input tax on any expense be refunded?
No. Entertainment expenses, personal-use motor vehicles, and purchases connected to tax evasion are excluded from recovery regardless of the invoice.
What happens if the FTA asks for more information mid-review?
The review pauses until you respond. A slow reply extends the timeline, so queries need answering as soon as they're raised, not batched for later.
